Stoneware and porcelain potteryGreg Schatz, a native of Defiance, Ohio, was first introduced to the art of ceramics at Defiance College. After two years of study, Greg transferred to Bowling Green State University, where he earned a B.F.A. in ceramics. Following graduation, Greg and wife Katie were married. Living in the Defiance area for three years, Greg worked for a construction company while Katie acquired a degree in education. In the spring of 1999, Greg and Katie were drawn to Brown County, Indiana by its scenic rural setting and art colony heritage. They purchased a home and began setting up a studio. Greg worked as a foreman for a lawn maintenance company while finishing the studio and building a kiln, as Katie finished her student teaching. In 2000, both Greg and Katie’s careers began as Katie took a sophomore English/journalism teaching position at a local high school, and Greg opened Schatz Studio & Gallery. As their careers flourish, so does their family. Son, Greyson was born in 2003 and daughter Romy in 2005.
Working full-time as a studio potter, Greg utilizes the potter’s wheel for the majority of his production, while choosing to hand-build some of his plates and platters. Maintaining a line of pottery that is gas-fired to cone 9 in a reduction atmosphere, Greg also creates one-of-a kind wood fired pieces. Greg’s pots have been included in national exhibitions such as Strictly Functional Pottery National and Functional Ceramics Exhibition, as well as in private and corporate collections including Phyllis Blair Clark, Andrew Glasgow, and the Ohio Craft Museum.
