Wood and mixed media
Michael is a native Hoosier,
raised in a small southern Indiana
town. He received a BFA in Sculpture from
IU Bloomington in 1976. After
graduation he learned furniture making by working in Brown County
woodshops, reading trade magazines, and by trial and error. His current
work is primarily custom ordered residential furniture, with some
occasional commercial work and cabinetry. A representative portfolio of
past work can be view at www.mevansdesign.com.
Artist Statement:
I consider myself to be a sculptor
and a studio furniture maker.
I use my art background
to enhance my furniture designs and my woodworking
skills to enhance my sculpture. The designs
for my one-of-a-kind studio furniture are influenced by
Asian art, the Arts and Crafts movement, Modern design, Art
Nouveau, Art Deco, and Frank Lloyd Wright to name just a
few. The designs for my commissioned
work are focused on the client's preferences, although the
final designs always reflect my personal style.
This is the second
year for my garden and it is
still a work in progress. The garden is located
in the midst of my salvage yard.
My hope is to
create a unique mix of flowers and salvaged
items that will bring out
the beauty in both. |
