Stoneware and Porcelain Pottery

Potter Larry Spears creates functional and decorative reduction-fired porcelain and stoneware pottery.  He brings a rich color palette to his wares with a wide variety of glazes and glazing techniques. As a primarily self-taught potter, Larry has been working at his craft for over 30 years.   Larry’s work is shown primarily in his studio, at various juried art shows during the year, and at numerous galleries in the USA.

Artist Statement:

My work with clay focuses primarily on the aspect of correlating functional form with contemporary design. The majority of the work if thrown with several pieces incorporating hand-built appendages into their design. I utilize various glazes and glazing techniques, with surface decoration to embellish the exterior of each piece. The work is reduction-fired in a 45 cubic foot down-draft kiln during an approximate 15 hour cycle. The work continues to evolve around the simple correlation between function and form. Capturing the innate integrity of each piece is perhaps the most challenging part of the process. Hopefully, the end result is a piece that can become a part of and enrich someone’s lifestyle.

Black and white photography

Utilizing medium format conventional camera, Kyle traditionally processes and prints all of his monochrome photography, exploring tonal ranges, composition, unique subject matter, and hopefully, creating a visual bridge for viewers.

Artist Statement:

My goal is to produce a wide range of black and white photographic images that reflect my perspective; on the relationship between shadow and light and in capturing unique subject matter. The art of photography allows me to express myself and find deeper meaning and beauty in the outside world. Photography is the tool for allowing reflections of my perspective in not only landscapes and cityscapes, but also social and political issues as well. The subject matter of my work is ever evolving, as is the interpretation of the themes. The art of photography allows me to express myself and find deeper meaning and beauty in the outside world.
